Sat-Sun Closed

Also closed for the holidays on Thursday December 25 and Thursday, January 1.

Spring semester hours begin on Monday, January 12.

LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON A CURRENT EVENT?

HOW CAN YOU KEEP INFORMED ABOUT A CURRENT NEWS DEVELOPMENT LIKE FERGUSON OR EBOLA?

Goddard Library provides access to NewsBank, providing unlimited access to the largest news database in existence.  Fulltext access is available for newspapers from all over the world.

NewsBank consolidates news reports on current events with NewsBank Special Reports.
The latest report features Ferguson, Missouri.  Articles include coverage of the first reports of the event in August, 2014 through the aftermath of the announcement and will continue to add new information as it becomes available.

Find NewsBank under our Newspapers Tab on the library website!  Look for the Special Reports on the left side of the NewsBank main page.

THANKSGIVING LIBRARY HOURS

Goddard Library will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.

The library will be OPEN on SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

ASK A LIBRARIAN: CHAT

There is a chat feature on the Goddard Library website.  It is located to the left of the library blog (lower left of the library website) under the "Ask a Librarian" icon.  The chat feature is one way to get a quick answer to your questions, on or off campus.

LEARNING EXPRESS LIBRARY DATABASE

Learning Express Library is a comprehensive, online database of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to help students and adult learners succeed on the academic or licensing tests they must pass. Some of the 770+ practice test types and tutorials include : ACT, SAT, GRE, MCAD, LSAT), elementary and high school tests (Advanced Placement; High School, Middle School, and Elementary School Skills), career preparation exams (GED, EMS, Firefighter, PPST - Praxis, Civil Service, and reading, math and writing skills practice), TOEFL and U.S. Citizenship Exams.

Learning Express Library also includes career and employment resources such as business writing, resumes, interviewing skills and computer software skills.

To access Learning Express Library, visit the Goddard Library website and click on “Find Articles and More”, then click on “Databases by Title” and Learning Express Library.  Take a look and please continue to ask questions by phone 507-536-5387,chat or email. 

POETRY AND SHORT STORY REFERENCE CENTER: DATABASE TRIAL

The library has a trial subscription to the database "Poetry and Short Story Reference Center."  This product is a collection of classic and contemporary poems, plays, speeches, biography, and authoritative essays on topics such as poetic forms, techniques and movements.  The trial continues until November 23.  It may be accessed by clicking on "Find Articles and More...", then "Trial Database Offerings."  Take a look and let us know what you think!

STUDY ROOMS AVAILABLE IN THE LIBRARY

The Goddard Library has seven study rooms available for quiet or group study.  Rooms will accommodate up to six people and have flat screen TV's and other equipment.  You may reserve a room up to two weeks in advance, for a two hour time period.  Study rooms may be reserved using your UCR ID card.  Simply visit the library website and click on "Study Rooms" on the left side of the screen.

LIBRARY DATABASES AVAILABLE 24/7!

Remember, library databases are available 24/7 from remote locations.  When you click on the database title, you will be required to log in using either your StarID, or the barcode from your UCR ID card as your username, and your last name as your password.  Research when it's convenient for you!

MINNESOTA AUTHOR JACK EL-HAI TO SPEAK!

Two-time Minnesota Book Award winner Jack El-Hai will be speaking in CF 206-208 on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 4:00 p.m.  Jack El-Hai writes books, essays and articles on the history of medicine, the history of science, and other historical topics.  His latest book, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist:  Hermann Goring, Dr. Douglas M. Kelley and a Fatal Meeting of Minds at the End of WWII won the 2014 Minnesota Book Award.  El-Hai's 2005 book, The Lobotomist:  A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness is also a Minnesota Book Award winner.


This event, hosted by Goddard Library, is part of SELCO's Fall 2014 Author Tour, and is funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

HOW DO I FIND THE WESTLAW DATABASE?

From the Goddard Library website click on "Find Articles and More...", then choose "Databases by Title."  Select "W" on the alphabet bar, and you will see Westlaw listed.  Click on Westlaw.  By default it opens to the "News" tab.  Click on the "Law" tab  and you will be ready to begin searching.  If you are accessing Westlaw from off campus, you will be asked to log in.  Your username is the barcode number (begins with 202) on the back of your UCR ID card and your password is your last name.

LOUISE ERDRICH WINS DAYTON LITERARY PEACE PRIZE

Minnesota author Louise Erdrich has won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize's achievement award.  The Dayton prizes are intended to recognize literature's power to influence peace, social justice and global understanding; the distinguished achievement award is given for an author's body of work.  Erdrich's latest novel, The Round House, won the 2012 National Book Award for fiction.  Her first novel, Love Medicine, won the 1984 National Book Critics Circle Award, and Plague of Doves was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.


The Goddard Library has these and many other titles by Louise Erdrich.  Stop in and take a look!

2014 PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION

THE GOLDFINCH, by Donna Tartt, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction this spring.  Described by "Kirkus Reviews as an..."elegant meditation on love, memory and the  haunting power of art"  the novel is hard to put down.  THE GOLDFINCH is a great story, beautifully told.  Stop in the Goddard Library and check it out!

COLLEGE TEACHING COLLECTION - USEFUL BOOKS FOR FACULTY

DID YOU KNOW?  The library has a College Teaching Collection (CTC) containing current books with practical college-level teaching information including teaching styles and methods, online learning, and service learning.

To search for titles, just type CTC in the Find Books search box.

The collection is located on the 2nd floor of the library at the end of the Reference Books.

Have a suggestion or donation for the collection?  Just talk to the librarian at the Reference Desk!

SUMMER READING IDEAS

If you're looking for some good summer reading, take a look in our glass display case by the library entrance.    Librarians have assembled a collection of nonfiction titles including Nathaniel Philbrick's Bunker Hill, The Patriarch, by David Nasaw, a biography of Joseph P. Kennedy, Hemingway's Boat, by Paul Hendrickson, and the fascinating history of the Beat Generation by Bill Morgan, The Typewriter is Holy.  If you don't see anything you like, ask the librarian at the Reference Desk for suggestions.
