National Women's History Month: March 2013!

The theme for National Women's History Month 2013 is "Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination:  Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics."

The library has assembled a collection of books about women and their achievements in a variety of fields, and they are displayed in the glass display case to your right as you enter the library.  You are invited to peruse these titles and check out any that interest you.

WHAT IS A PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE?

A peer-reviewed article has gone through a process which determines its validity and quality for publication in a scholarly journal.  The author of the article submits it to a journal editor who forwards the article to an editorial board, experts in the field, considered to be the author's peers.  The article is carefully evaluated for accuracy and the validity of the research methodology is examined.  If the article is lacking in these areas, it is rejected for publication in the journal.  Some characteristics of a peer-reviewed article are:

---Is the  journal in which you found the article published by a professional scholarly society or a professional association?

---Does the article have an abstract, or a summary at the beginning?

---Does the article have a bibliography at the end?

---Are the author's credentials listed?

---Is the subject of the article narrow in focus and explored in depth?

---Is the article based on original research?

---Is the article aimed at individuals with prior knowledge of the subject?

Many databases, such as Academic Search Premier and CINAHL will enable you to limit your research to peer-reviewed articles.  Choose the advanced search option and look for the check-box that allows you to limit your results to peer-reviewed only.  And remember, there is a librarian at the Reference/Information Desk to offer assistance!

TRIAL DATABASE AVAILABLE

The library has a trial to the database Writer's Reference Center available through March 16.  Writer's Reference Center provides users with a convenient one-stop location for all the tools necessary to write and research effectively.  From the mechanics of writing and grammar to style and research, this online resource thoroughly covers the fundamentals of quality writing and provides a wealth of vocabulary-building reference dictionaries.  To access the trial, click on "Find Articles and More...", then just below to the far right, click on "Database Trial Offerings."  Let us know what you think!

AUTHOR SHAWN OTTO TO SPEAK AT UCR!!!

Shawn Otto, author of Fool Me Twice:  Fighting the Assault on Science in America will be speaking at UCR on Thursday evening, February 21.  Otto won the 2012 Minnesota Book Award for Fool Me Twice.  He is also the screenwriter and coproducer of the film "House of Sand and Fog," nominated for three Academy Awards.  He writes for DreamWorks, Lions Gate and Starz.  Join us at 7:00 in CF 206-208 for this very special event, sponsored by Southeastern Libraries Cooperating, using funds from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.  Goddard Library is hosting the program.

PRESIDENTS' DAY, MON., FEB. 18

The library will be open as usual on Presidents' Day, Monday, February 18 (7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.).  A librarian will be available to assist you during those hours.

LIBRARY TOURS

Library tours are over for the spring semester.  However, there will be a tour on Student Success Day, February 21 at 9:00 a.m. if you missed the regularly scheduled tours.  The tour is approximately 30 minutes long; we will meet at the Refrerence/Information Desk in the library.
